TRANSFORMING TRAINING FOR SOCIAL WORKERS IN WALES
 
CPEL Launch

An important new scheme launched today (Tuesday, 20 March) is set to have a significant  impact on social workers’ learning throughout their careers in Wales.

The Continuing Professional Education and Learning (CPEL) framework will provide a consistent standard of post qualifying education and training for all social workers in Wales.

The initiative is a response to the Welsh Government’s call for a national career structure for social workers to prepare them for the complexities of their role now and in the future. The first phase of the framework, the Consolidation Programme, is being launched today by the Care Council for Wales to mark World Social Work Day.

Positive picture of social work workforce in Wales

More newly-qualified social workers are being recruited in Wales and the number of unfilled posts is falling, according to a new report.

That’s one of the key messages from the latest joint report from the Care Council and the Association of Directors of Social Services (ADSS) Cymru on the stability of the social work workforce and the numbers of newly-qualified practitioners that are likely to be needed in Wales.

The Care Council and Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW) have been working on a joint plan to ensure they can support the effective delivery of the Welsh Government’s policy paper, Sustainable Social Services for Wales, published last year.

Move Towards New Legislation Is Welcomed

Consultation on proposed new legislation for social services in has been launched by the Welsh Government.

This follows an announcement by the Deputy Minister for Children and Social Services at the end of January that the Welsh Government is to press ahead with its plans to introduce a new Bill in the autumn.
